How Acupuncture Calms the Brain in Pain-Induced Emotional Disorders

Chronic pain is frequently accompanied by anxiety and depression. New research demonstrates that electroacupuncture can significantly alleviate pain-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors by modulating specific excitatory neurons in the brain. Using a mouse model of nerve injury, the study shows that electroacupuncture activates glutamatergic neurons in a prefrontal brain region involved in emotion regulation, thereby restoring emotional balance without impairing motor function. These findings provide mechanistic evidence that non-pharmacological neuromodulation can directly target brain circuits underlying pain-related emotional disorders, offering new insights into integrative approaches for managing chronic pain and its psychological consequences.
